This is the Story Behind Father’s Day

Father’s Day has different origins depending on the country and religious tradition. One of the earliest stems from Catholicism—for example, in Spain, Father’s Day is celebrated on March 19th, honoring the feast day of Saint Joseph. But…

What about June?

An American war veteran named William Jackson Smart became a widower when his wife died during childbirth with their sixth child. He raised his children with care, love, and dedication—becoming a role model that his daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, felt deserved recognition. After hearing a sermon honoring Mother’s Day at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church, and being a member of the congregation herself, Sonora was inspired to propose a day to honor fathers as well.

She initially suggested June 5th, her father’s birthday, but the date was later changed to the third Sunday in June.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. President Lyndon B. Johnson officially recognized it in 1966, and it was made permanent by President Richard Nixon.
